Beyond the Vines: A "Four Fine Friends" Guide to the Finger Lakes Distillery Boom
Shaken, Stirred, and Small-Batch: Our Top 7 Spirit Destinations in the Finger Lakes.

While the Finger Lakes (FLX) has long been world-renowned for its award-winning Rieslings, there is a new spirit rising over our hills—literally! Over the last decade, the craft distillery scene in the FLX has exploded, growing from just a handful of pioneers to a robust community of artisans. Thanks to the "Farm Distillery Act," our local distillers are using New York-grown grains, fruits, and even maple syrup to create spirits that rival the best in the world.
We "Four Fine Friends" have spent quite a few afternoons exploring these "spirited" spots. From polished venues with lake views to rustic barns on gravel roads, the diversity of the distillery experience is what makes this region so special. Grab your glass and join us as we review some of our favorite stops along the trail!
Barrelhouse 6 (Hammondsport)
If you are looking for a spot that nails the "craft" aesthetic, this is it. Barrelhouse 6 boasts a massive bar and a seating area that just begs you to stay a while.
- The Vibe: Sleek but welcoming. The view off the back deck is absolutely spectacular—truly one of the best in the area.
- The Sips: Their Old Fashioned is a contender for the best in the FLX. However, we found their Espresso Martini lacked the richness and creaminess we usually crave.
- The Snacks: The food menu is solid, but the real star of the show? The Tater Tots. Trust us, get an order for the table.

Birdseye Hollow Distillery (Bradford)
This place is the definition of cozy, warm, and rustic. It feels like visiting a friend’s (very cool) cabin.
- The Vibe: Super friendly and unpretentious.
- The Sips: Their secret weapon is the maple syrup from their own sugar shack. Their Maple Syrup Bourbon Old Fashioned is officially the best we’ve ever had, and their Espresso Martini currently holds our #1 spot!
- The Snacks: Great pizzas and classic bar goodies to keep you fueled.

Finger Lakes Distilling (Burdett)
One of the "OGs" of the region, this venue is fantastic and grand. It’s a must-visit for any spirit enthusiast.
- The Sips: Years ago, we found their Bourbon a bit "rough," but time has been kind! It has mellowed beautifully, bringing forward lovely caramel and vanilla notes. Their Espresso Martini is top-tier, and the Old Fashioned is very reliable.

Barrington Distillers (Barrington)
Now, this place is a hoot! Located on a back road that can be a bit of a "choose your own adventure" for your tires, it’s a non-descript building that holds so much heart.
- The Vibe: You might leave with a little dog hair on your clothes from the resident pups, but you’ll also leave with a smile. The people here are some of the friendliest we've met.
- The Experience: It’s all about great conversation and honest cocktails.

Krookid Leyk Distillery (Hammondsport)
The "new kid on the block" is making quite a splash. The tasting room is intimate, but the outdoor area is the place to be.
- The Vibe: Fantastic views of Keuka Lake and helpful, friendly bartenders.
- The Sips: We highly recommend the Old Fashioned Flight. We spent a long, wonderful afternoon here tasting through their menu, and every single cocktail was top-notch.

Krooked Tusker (Hammondsport)
This one is a point of friendly contention! Jim absolutely loves it; Kathy... well, she’s still coming around.
- The Vibe: It’s a bit of a "dive bar" feel—laid back, nothing fancy, and an awful lot of fun.
- The Sips: The cocktails can be on the rougher side, but they have a spirit of adventure. The outside deck and lawn area are great for a casual hang.

Black Sheep Distillery (Hammondsport)
A military-themed distillery that feels deeply personal and incredibly caring.
- The Vibe: Rustic with lots of natural wood and comfortable seating. The staff here truly treats you like family.
- The Sips: Their "Leatherneck" Old Fashioned is a winner, and their Espresso Martini is among our favorites. The porches and lawn seating make it a perfect summer afternoon stop.

Four Fine Friends Tip:
When you're out exploring the distillery trail, remember that many of these craft spirits, especially the bourbons and whiskies, pack a bit more of a punch than your average glass of wine. We highly recommend the "One-for-One" rule: for every craft cocktail or spirit flight you enjoy, drink a full glass of water. Not only will it keep you hydrated, but it cleanses your palate so you can truly taste those subtle notes of maple, vanilla, and oak in the next pour. Also, keep an eye on those winter hours as some of our favorite "back-road" spots like Barrington or Krookid Leyk might close a little earlier in the colder months, so a quick check of their social media before you head out is always a smart move!
