From Bourbon with Ham to Champagne with Oysters: Classic Pairings That Define the American Holiday Table

The Christmas and New Year holidays in the USA are synonymous with warmth, togetherness, and, of course, delicious food and drink. Certain food and spirit pairings have become cherished traditions, evolving over centuries to define our festive tables. These combinations aren't just about taste; they carry history, cultural significance, and often a touch of nostalgic comfort. From rich main courses to celebratory toasts, understanding these classic pairings enhances the holiday experience, offering both flavor harmony and a connection to generations past.

One of the most enduring Christmas traditions involves Roasted Ham with a Glaze (often pineapple, cherry, or brown sugar-mustard) paired with a robust spirit like Bourbon or Rye Whiskey. The tradition of consuming ham for Christmas in America harks back to European customs, where cured meats were a winter staple, and a whole ham signified prosperity. The salty, savory richness of the ham beautifully complements the caramel, vanilla, and often spicy notes found in Bourbon, or the drier, peppery finish of Rye. For those enjoying a Christmas roast, a classic Eggnog—a creamy, spiced, and often brandy or rum-spiked custard drink—is another iconic pairing. Originating from medieval British drinks, eggnog became popular in America due to the abundance of rum and dairy. It's a dessert in itself, perfect with a slice of Fruitcake (if you're a fan!) or a simple sugar cookie, its sweetness and spice embracing the holiday spirit.

As the calendar turns, New Year's Eve calls for spirits that symbolize celebration and hope. The classic pairing here is undoubtedly Champagne (or sparkling wine) with lighter, more celebratory fare. The tradition of toasting with Champagne on New Year's Eve gained popularity in the 19th century, becoming a symbol of luxury and festivity. Its crisp acidity and effervescence cut through rich foods and cleanse the palate. Ideal food partners include Oysters on the Half Shell, their brininess a perfect counterpoint to the wine's bubbles, or delicate Smoked Salmon Blinis, where the richness of the salmon and crème fraîche is lifted by the sparkling wine. For a heartier option often enjoyed on New Year's Day for good luck, Pork and Sauerkraut is a strong contender, particularly in regions with German heritage. While beer is a common pairing, a crisp, dry Riesling also complements the dish, its acidity balancing the sauerkraut's tang and the pork's savory notes. These pairings, whether for Christmas warmth or New Year's sparkle, ensure your holiday table is rich with flavor and history.
