From Frosty First Day Hikes to Cozy Winery Sips: Your Guide to Kicking Off 2026 in the Finger Lakes.

Happy 2026, everyone! If you're looking to kick off the new year with a blend of fresh air, local flavor, and a touch of cozy winter charm, the Finger Lakes has you covered. While many of us are still recovering from the holiday hustle, the first week of January is a fantastic time to slow down and enjoy the unique pace of the region in winter. Whether you're looking to lace up your hiking boots or swirl a glass of world-class Riesling, here’s what’s happening during the first week of January 2026 across our beautiful region.

Get Moving: First Day Hikes (January 1)

The tradition of "First Day Hikes" is back for its 15th year! It's the perfect way to "get offline and get outside" as part of New York State's wellness initiative. Many state parks are waiving parking fees for the day, and guided hikes are available for all skill levels.

  • Taughannock Falls State Park (Trumansburg): Join guided hikes to see the falls in their winter glory.
  • Seneca Lake State Park (Geneva): Perfect for a family-friendly lakeside stroll to start the year right.
  • Catharine Valley Trail (Watkins Glen): Explore self-guided or group options through this scenic corridor.
  • Palmyra & Macedon (Erie Canal): Inclusive hikes for all abilities along the historic canal trails.

Sip & Savor: Seneca Sips & Suds (Starts January 2)

Starting January 2nd and running through the end of the month, the Seneca Lake Wine Trail kicks off Seneca Sips & Suds. This is a more relaxed way to explore the trail during the quieter winter months. While it's not a single-weekend festival, many wineries offer special tastings and pairings throughout January, making it a great time for a "self-guided" discovery tour without the summer crowds.

For the Night Owls: New Year’s Gala (January 1, 12 AM - 2 AM)

If you're looking to keep the party going past midnight on New Year's Eve, the Argos Inn in Ithaca is hosting their New Year's Gala until 2 AM on January 1st. Enjoy live music from New Planets and The Djangoners, plus fire pits for s'mores and award-winning cocktails to toast the very first hours of 2026.

Culture & Community (January 1 - 7)

  • 2025 Annual Juried Show (Ithaca): This art exhibition at the State of the Art Gallery in Ithaca continues through the first week of January, showcasing some of the best local talent from the past year.
  • Live Music Wednesdays (Seneca Lake): Wineries like Ventosa Vineyards continue their year-round tradition of live music, providing a cozy indoor escape with great views of the lake.

Looking Ahead

While not in the first week, keep these on your radar for later in January:

  • Winter Village Music Camp (Ithaca): A weekend of acoustic music and workshops (Jan 8–11).
  • ChocoVino Festival (Canandaigua): Chocolate and wine pairing fun at Hotel Canandaigua (Jan 17).
  • Watkins Glen Fire & Ice Festival: The big winter highlight featuring 40,000 lbs of ice sculptures (Jan 29–31).

Four Fine Friends Tip:

Winter in the Finger Lakes can be unpredictable! Always check the weather before heading out for a hike, and we highly recommend making reservations if you're planning a winery visit, as some tasting rooms move to winter hours.

Enjoy the start of your 2026 adventure!
